A plan was devised to develop a large sand mound on which a cross had been erected. In this area, Brian and Mary offered to develop a garden and continue the on-going maintenance at no cost to the Parish. In accepting the offer, Fr Cameron and the Parish Council envisaged the opportunity for this area to become a Memorial Garden.
Following the arrival of The Rev'd Ken Spreadborough, as Fr Cameron's replacement in May, 2000, the proposal to turn the garden into a Memorial Garden for deceased parishioners was approved by Parish Council and endorsed by Brian and Mary.
Diocesan approval was obtained and the garden was duly consecrated by the then Archbishop, The Most Reverend Dr Peter Hollingworth in November, 2000. The first ashes were interred in early 2000.
Those interred in the Garden are those who, in their lifetimes, had some reasonable connection with the Parish of Coolangatta - Palm Beach, or whose immediate family are regular worshippers in the Parish.
No plaques or other items identifying those who are interred, nor where they are interred, are placed in or near the garden, nor in the Church. A Memorial Book is kept for public access in St Paul's Church. This shows some details of the deceased, which may include full name and photo of the deceased, date of birth, death and interment, and a short biographical history of up to 200 words.
Further details and enquiries should be addressed to the Parish Priest.
